THE PROS AND CONS OF LITHIUM ION BATTERIES

Since their first commercial release, lithium-ion batteries have been the preferred choice for rechargeable batteries in the market for over two decades. Nickel cadmium used to be the standard before lithium ion was invented. However, lithium has twice as much energy density than nickel cadmium. This makes it a far more powerful option for batteries.

ADVANTAGES OF LITHIUM ION BATTERIES

These are just a few of the many lithium ion battery advantages that make this type of battery so popular in mobile devices and laptops.

High energy density. Lithium-ion has twice the energy density as nickel-cadmium. This means it takes two to three times more nickel-cadmium cells to produce the same amount of power as one battery made of lithium ion. This is important for electronic devices, such as smartphones, laptops, power tools, and electric cars. It's ideal for a battery to last longer than the time it has to charge.

Low maintenance: Like other types of batteries, lithium ion batteries require little extra care. They are not susceptible to cycling and don't have any memory. Lithium ion batteries can be used to replace other batteries. You can also use them without priming, which makes them even easier to use.

Low self discharge rate: Lithium-ion batteries are much more self-dischargeable than other types. The self-discharge rate of lithium ion batteries drops by 1% to 2% each month after they are charged.

Varieties of types: You can find a wide range of lithium ion battery sizes. They are more versatile than other types, so you can use them in different applications.

DISADVANTAGES OF LITHIUM ION BATTERIES

Protective measures are required. The main disadvantage of lithium-ion batteries is their need to be protected from overcharging and complete discharge. This is done either by adding protection circuitry in the battery or within the device. It limits charge and discharge functions to ensure that they are at their best.

Problems associated with aging: Despite technology improving, an average lithium ion batteries can only withstand between 500-1,000 discharge cycles before they fail. Their lifespan is limited and can limit how long a device may be used, especially if the battery has been integrated into the device, as you can see in today's smartphones.

Pricey: Lithium Ion can cost up to 40% more than nickel-cadmium batteries. This can prove prohibitive in some cases.
